IUP Music Department Retired Professor Emeritus, Dr. Gary Bird, has released a new CD, Tuba Safari, featuring the music of composer Gregory Fritze. The disc features solo and chamber works by Fritze performed by the composer, Bird, and various IUP faculty and students. Collaborators include IUP faculty members, Dr. Kevin Eisensmith, Dr. David Ferguson, Dr. Jack Scandrett, Dr. Christian Dickinson, and Dr. Jason Worzbyt, and IUP students Geoff Durbin, Justin Beish, Steven Fassnacht, Dan Kerstetter, Grant Shearer, Larry Sarvey, and Jon Wylie. The CD is recorded on Albany Records and is available from numerous national retailers. The recital will begin at 6:30 in Slee Recital Hall. Dr. Zach Collins, assistant professor of Tuba and Euphonium, and Anthony O’Toole, senior Theory and Composition student at IUP, have recently published works for tuba and euphonium through Cimarron Music Press. O’Toole’s “Scarborough Variations” and “Shake and Bake” (a setting of the popular Shaker Hymn “Simple Gifts”) for tuba/euphonium quartet are now available from Cimarron Music Press. Both works were commissioned by the Crimson Tuba Quartet, an IUP student tuba/euphonium quartet. Cimarron Music Press will soon be publishing Anthony O’Toole’s “Concerto for Tuba,” “Concerto for Euphonium,” “Three Miniatures for Tuba,” and “Chronicle for Solo Tuba.” Dr. Collins had two arrangements and one composition accepted for publication. Cimarron Music Press has published his arrangements of the “Allegretto” from Symphony No. 7 by L.V. Beethoven (tuba/euphonium octet) and “Cruda Amarilli” by Claudio Monteverdi (tuba/euphonium quintet). Dr. Collins’ original work for tuba/euphonium trio, “Chaconne and Dance,” is also available from Cimarron Music Press. Dr. Zach Collins will perform a solo recital and concerto at the 2010 U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference in Ft. Myer, VA. He will perform a recital on Thursday, January 29, that will feature two works by senior Theory and Composition student, Anthony O'Toole. On Friday, January 30 he will perform Robert Jager's Concerto for Bass Tuba with the U.S. Army Orchestra. Videos from the IUP Tubaphonium Ensemble's recent OcTUBAfest performance are now posted on the 2009-2010 Tubaphonium Videos page. Zach Collins premiered a new work by IUP faculty member, Dr. David Martynuik, entitled Variations on a Theme by Billy Joel in a recital on November 19, 2009 in Gorell Recital Hall. The piece was written for Dr. Collins and the IUP percussion ensemble. Variations features 13 virtuosic variations in such diverse styles as habanera, gamelan, and Bartok. Oystein Baadsvik to visit IUP 08/27/2009
Oystein Baadsvik will be the 2009 IUP OcTUBAfest guest artist. He will conduct a master class at 2 PM in Cogswell 121 and a recital in Gorell Recital Hall at 8 PM on October 22. Both events are free and open to the public. The IUP Tuba and Euphonium Studio has a full slate of performances and events planned for Fall 2009.
